Do employers value AI skills? How can graduates make use of it?

Ai July2024

Employer demand for AI skills among business school graduates is currently limited, according to a recent survey by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC). Despite the rise of large language models like ChatGPT, AI skills ranked 21st out of 22 important skills for recruiters. Only 26% of global employers consider AI skills crucial in today’s workforce. However, there’s consensus that the ability to leverage AI will become significantly more important over the next five years.

Why Employers Value AI Skills

Automation and Efficiency: AI can automate repetitive tasks, leading to increased efficiency and reduced costs. Employees with AI skills can help companies implement and manage these systems.

Data-Driven Decision Making: AI enables better data analysis and insights. Businesses value employees who can develop and use AI tools to derive meaningful insights from data.

Innovation and Competitive Advantage: AI technologies can lead to innovative products and services, giving companies a competitive edge. Skills in AI allow employees to contribute to these innovations.

Demand Across Industries: AI is applicable in numerous sectors such as healthcare, finance, retail, manufacturing, and more. This broad applicability means AI skills are in demand in a wide range of fields.

Personalization and Customer Experience: AI can enhance customer experiences through personalized services and recommendations. Employees who can implement AI solutions in this area are highly valuable.

How Graduates Can Make Use of AI Skills

  1. Build a Strong Foundation: Graduates should focus on learning the fundamentals of AI, including machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, and data science.
  2. Practical Experience: Working on real-world projects, internships, and hands-on experience with AI tools and frameworks (such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, and scikit-learn) can be highly beneficial.
  3. Certifications and Courses: Earning certifications from reputable institutions (such as Coursera, edX, or specific AI certifications from tech companies like Google, IBM, and Microsoft) can enhance credibility.
  4. Stay Updated: AI is a rapidly evolving field. Keeping up with the latest research, trends, and technologies is crucial. Reading research papers, following industry news, and participating in AI communities can help.
  5. Showcase Skills: Creating a portfolio of AI projects and showcasing them on platforms like GitHub or personal websites can demonstrate practical skills to potential employers.
  6. Network and Collaborate: Joining AI-focused groups, attending conferences, and participating in hackathons can provide networking opportunities and collaboration experiences with other professionals in the field.
  7. Soft Skills: While technical skills are important, employers also value soft skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and the ability to communicate complex ideas effectively.
  8. Tailor Applications: When applying for jobs, tailor your resume and cover letter to highlight relevant AI skills and experiences. Providing specific examples of how you have applied AI to solve problems can make your application stand out.
